II International Engineering Seminar
Universidad Nacional de Colombia
June 17th - July 11th 2008

The series of International Engineering lectures and courses constitute a key component of the School of Engineering and Universidad Nacional´s new academic initiative that seeks to offer an educational experience that builds communication and cooperation with the international community and foreign universities.

The Internacional Engineering Seminal will contribute to the increase in engineering knowledge and the opening of new teaching techniques. The visit of the international invitees, coming from different excellent universities in the field of engineering, will construct a platform for continuous academic dialogue.

This will be a valuable opportunity for students that have not had the chance to participate in an international program. It is hoped that this project will contribute to their personal and academic development, and permits them to experience, in their own campus, an international environment.

The first version of the International Engineering Seminar was held from June 15th to July 13th 2007. during this month of intense immersion in an academic environment the participating students achieved the acquisition of knowledge in Engineering and they were able to improve their English language skills, appreciate other countries and cultures, and gain exposure to differing styles and methods of academic instruction and evaluation.

As it was done last year, under the direction of the Dean of the School of Engineering and in coordination with the International Office, an academic support team was formed to organize this event. This support team consists of engineering professors that received their doctoral training in foreign universities and institutions.

This series of International Engineering lectures and courses will consist of five (4) graduate courses, which can be taken as elective courses by undergraduate students. These courses will be taught during the summer semester in 2008 (June 16th-July 11th), divided in 4 weekly modules, by highly qualified and respected foreign professors from some of the best engineering universities in the world. We are sure that the visiting professors will supply innovations in the field of engineering which they specialize in. The courses will be supported in large part by National University professors who will assist the visiting professors in the formulation of academic material.

Following are the courses that will be offered through the II International Engineering Seminar:

1. Polymeric Materials, Processing and Nanocomposites

Coordinator:

Prof. Jairo E. Perilla, Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Sede Bogotá

All the courses will be taught in English, if the module is taught by a foreign professor and in Spanish if the module is taught by a local professor.  The courses will consist of 64 instructional hours as follows: 4 hours per day, 4 days per week for 4 weeks preferably. Due to the intensive nature of the course schedule, each student will only be able to enroll in one course offered during the series. Undergraduate students who enroll (last two semesters of the program ONLY) can not apply the course to their graduation requirements. The students also should have a good proficiency in English that permits them to be able to understand the material assigned by the professors and participate in class discussions.

The Deans of the Schools of Engineering have agreed that each campus will be financially responsible for the lodging and meals of the students who will travel to take these courses, agreeing also on the number of students each campus will receive.

The II International Engineering Seminar has this Webpage with all the information about courses, professors, topics, etc., with a link to the webpage of the fist version of the seminal so that the audience can see what was done last year.

The cost of the course for non-National University participants will be COP$1’000,000.oo for the whole seminar or COP$300.000 per week, for the graduate students of the Schools of Engineering at UNC each course will cost COP$400,000.oo; and for undergraduate students at UNC each course will cost COP$25.000.oo  Enrollments are open from March 25th to April 23rd 2008.
